As given to me on a handmade card…

Two days after a conversation I had with a friend and castmate in a show I’m currently doing, she gave me a simple yet stunning card with the following quote handwritten on the front. It answers every question I’ve asked of myself lately:

 

To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch… to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; This is to have succeeded!

Change your calendar, don’t go changing…

There’s nothing unusual about going through a period of reflection and self-assessment at the end of the year. But this is different. See, this wasn’t an ordinary year.

When only thinking about 2010 in passing- the way you leave a high school exam with only a vague notion of either success or failure- I seem to glance at this year as one of unfulfilled potential. One in which I could have achieved much more than I did.

And yet, this year I:

- Got married (including all the Danny Ocean-esque planning that entails)
– Drove around Western Europe with my Princess Bride (ditto)
– Quit my job
– Moved to Brunswick
– Started a business, including designing business cards and building a website
– Embraced my passion for cooking
– Secured daily work for a client about whom I’m immensely passionate
– Got my health in check (or closer to the mystical ‘in check’ than it’s been in a while…)
– Applied (unsuccessfully, but with a sense of accomplishment) for Masterchef
– Planned out an entire novel, including a full breakdown of characters, scenes and plot movements; a step which has challenged and eluded me for almost a decade
– Started rehearsing for a musical
