The food’s not the thing though.

26 May

I cooked again tonight, the first time in a while, and was excited about the potential results. Hand-made tortellini filled with sweet potato, leek, ricotta and imported French truffle oil, on a pickled mushroom tomato sauce, topped with micro-basil, imported Italian parmesan and the first-press extra virgin olive oil I saw get made on Monday at Cobram Estate.

But I didn’t really taste it. I was too busy being overwhelmed at having my amazing, inspirational, creative, artistic friend back at my dinner table, back in my life. My wife, my friend and I. Who cares about the food?

My first recipe: Slow-cooked Lamb Ravioli with Roasted Balsamic Tomatoes

22 Jul

As I’ve mentioned, since I quit full-time work I’ve been working part-time as a food writer for a great store called The Essential Ingredient.

Reading, writing, tweeting and Facebooking for them has completely reignited my passion for cooking. Or, since it never really went away, taken my joy of playing with my food to a new level.

So here is the first proper recipe (beyond 2-minute noodles with chopped up leftover chicken and oyster sauce) that I’ve made up.

I don’t want to say ‘created’, because it’s been done plenty of times before… Actually, it’s pretty-much an ancient Italian idea. Also, some credit needs to go to Jamie Oliver for inspiring the pasta recipe.

I’ve already started work on recipe #2 (Asian-inspired…), so please let me know what you think of this one…
